Condition: Near fine in near fine jacket. First edition. An unusually attractive and unblemished first printing of a book which served as many cooks' lifelong working companion. Famously directed to "the servantless American cook, " the three authors' masterwork tailored the purity of French tradition to the specific circumstances of the mid-century American woman. Their ideal reader is carefully imagined: middle-class, married, responsible alone for all household duties, the scope of her culinary world rigorously bounded by quotidian demands to prioritize "budgets, waistlines, children's schedules." But such a cook might, if only "on occasion, " relegate those considerations to second place, and look first to her own pleasure, fine artistry, and sensual satisfaction. 10'' x 7''. Original red and cream cloth. In original unclipped ($10.00) teal dust jacket. Red topstain. Teal endpapers. Typography, binding, and jacket design by Warren Chappell; illustrations by Sidonie Coryn. xv, [1], 684, xxii, [2] pages. Minor toning to boards. Jacket spine sunned; slight scuffing to spine extremities; faintest small stains to front panel. Topstain faded; small stains to rear endpaper.

A splendid copy bound in finely woven white cloth stamped brightly in blue fleur-de-lys. Very clean and tight throughout, virtually unread. Lovely rose endpapers and light blue topstaining. In a complete, very good plus dust jacket with the original price of $12.50 at the top of the inside front flap. Light rubbing to the top and bottom of the spine ends; touch of soiling to the rear panel and the top edge of the front flap. A collectible copy of this classic. This copy is boldly inscribed in black ink: "Bon Apptit to Sydney & Silke Moss, Julia Child" on the front endpaper. Provenance: From the library of Sydney Moss who opened the hair salon La Pli! on Mount Auburn St., Cambridge in 1968. He cut and styled Julia Child's hair for over 20 years, as well the hair of such luminaries as Seamus Heaney, John K. Galbraith, Tom Lehrer, Rothschildes and DuPonts. Child's second book, The French Chef Cookbook, was a collection of the recipes she had demonstrated on the show. It was soon followed in 1971 by Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume Two, again in collaboration with Simone Beck, but not with Louisette Bertholle, with whom the professional relationship had ended. Child's fourth book, From Julia Child's Kitchen, was illustrated with her husband's photographs and documented the color series of The French Chef, as well as provided an extensive library of kitchen notes compiled by Child during the course of the show. Julia Child had a large impact on American households and housewives. Because of the technology in the 60s, the show was unedited, causing her blunders to appear in the final version and ultimately lend "authenticity and approachability to television." According to Toby Miller in "Screening Food: French Cuisine and the Television Palate," one mother he spoke to said that sometimes "all that stood between me and insanity was hearty Julia Child" because of Child's ability to soothe and transport her. In addition, Miller notes that Child's show began before the feminist movement of the 1960's, which meant that the issues housewives and women faced were somewhat ignored on television. (Wikipedia) Stated First Edition on the copyright page. Matching dates of 1970.
